The 2009 Mayor’s Cup Splash Party was held at the Naked Turtle on Friday, July 10, as part of Sunrise Rotary’s waterfront events for the 32nd Annual Mayor’s Cup Festival. The event was truly a “splash” as many landlubbers enjoyed sunshine (a rarity this summer) and danced to the music of Mango Jam.
A raffle was held with prizes donated by local businesses, including a kayak as the grand prize. The highlight of the event was the capture of Capt “Rot” Ary, the pirate who stole the coveted trophy of the Mayor’s Cup Regatta at the Launch Party/Media Night on June 9. After numerous sightings throughout the month, he was spotted at the Splash Party and captured – with cup in hand – by Samuel de Champlain (aka “Sammy D”) who was in Plattsburgh to celebrate the Quadricentennial.
Sunrise Rotary hosts the Splash Party, Parade of Lights, and Regatta waterfront events as part of their contribution to the popular Mayor’s Cup Festival. Money raised from the events allows Sunrise Rotary to support other community projects throughout the year. This year, they will donate a portion of their net profits toward the new City Waterfront Park.
Ten members of the Champlain Valley BPW members attended the Go Red for Women dinner on January 21 at the Angell College Center. Most sporting red, over 400 attendees enjoyed a heart healthy dinner, keynote humorist survivor speaker, heart seminars, breakout sessions and a silent auction to benefit Go Red Women.
